The best months for Gulf Stream marlin off the Outer Banks
Blue marlin, white marlin and yellowfin tuna all move through the Gulf Stream on their own schedule. Here is how we plan the calendar around them.
Hatteras sits closer to the Gulf Stream than almost any other port on the East Coast, which means the marlin bite starts earlier here and runs later into the fall than most anglers expect.
May through July: the white marlin run
White marlin show up first, usually by late May, and the bite builds through June and July. Blue marlin start mixing in by mid June as the water continues to warm.
- Water temperature is the real signal, not the calendar date
- Ballyhoo trolled on the color change works most mornings
- Book four to six weeks out for a July weekend
The stream moves inshore and offshore by miles some weeks. We chase the color change, not a fixed spot on the chart.
August through October: tuna and the fall run
Yellowfin and bigeye tuna push into range as the marlin bite tapers, and wahoo fishing picks up through the fall as the water starts to cool again.
